Unit Notes – ICU (MICU/SICU)\n\nRequired Background\n\nMust have experience in a Level I or Level II Trauma Center\n\nMust have worked in a hospital with 300+ beds\n\nUnit Details\n\nUnit: ICU – 2nd Floor (MICU with some SICU)\n\nNumber of Beds: 16\n\nNurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2\n\nRequired Certifications\n\nBLS\n\nACLS\n\nNIHSS\n\nCommon Diagnoses / Patient Population\n\nCRRT (Prismaflex)\n\nRotaprone therapy\n\nTargeted Temperature Management (Arctic Sun)\n\nMass Transfusion Protocol (MTP)\n\nTrain-of-Four monitoring; frequent paralytics\n\nECMO (occasionally)\n\nContinuous 24-hour EEG monitoring\n\nEVD and lumbar drains\n\nNeurosurgical patients\n\nTrauma (drownings, tractor rollovers, fractures, MVAs)\n\nSpinal injuries\n\nSepsis, DKA\n\nPost-operative recoveries\n\nCOVID\n\nPost –heart cath patients (may pull sheaths)\n\nSI patients\n\nBedside procedures: trachs, chest tube insertions, bronchoscopy, arterial line insertion\n\nOrgan recovery cases (procurement only; no transplants performed)\n\nRequired / Preferred Experience\n\nLevel II trauma experience or higher required\n\nCRRT experience highly preferred\n\nExperience pulling arterial/venous sheaths preferred\n\nDrips & Medications\n\nRNs are required to titrate drips\n\nCommon drips include:\n\nPrecedex\n\nVasopressors\n\nAntiarrhythmics\n\nSedation\n\nStandard ICU infusions\n\nStaffing & Support\n\nCharge Nurse:\n\nDay shift: typically a “Blessing” staff nurse\n\nNight shift: may be House Supervisor\n\nCharge takes a smaller assignment to assist staff\n\nNurse Aides: Yes\n\nIntensivist/Hospitalist Coverage: 24/7 (MD & NP)\n\nRespiratory Therapy:\n\nRT assigned to ICU/PCU 24/7\n\nFull respiratory equipment available (vents, CPAP, BiPAP, etc.)\n\nTelemetry\n\nDedicated telemetry monitor technician\n\nRNs interpret their own strips\n\nMonitor Brand: Draeger\n\nScheduling\n\nShifts: 3 × 12-hour shifts (7:00 start)\n\nSelf-scheduling: Not guaranteed\n\nBlock scheduling: Not guaranteed (discuss with leadership)\n\nSchedule Posted: 6 weeks in advance\n\nWeekend & Holiday Requirements\n\nWeekends: Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday)\n\nHolidays: Rotational with core staff\n\nCall / Floating\n\nCall/Standby: None\n\nFloating:\n\nRare\n\nMay float to PCU or CVICU\n\nCould take patients, but typically functions as help-all\n\nDress Code\n\nScrub Color: Black\n\nOrientation\n\nUnit Orientation:\n\n1 × 12-hour shift on the shift and unit of hire\n\nFirst Day:\n\n12–14 hours\n\nCompetencies, computer-based learning, and general orientation
