Position Overview

Job Title: IT Migration Technician - Windows 10 to 11 Upgrade Specialist
Employment Type: Temporary/Contract
Duration: 4-5 weeks (approximately 20-25 business days)
Start Date: 10/1/2025

Reports To: IT Manager/Project Manager
Compensation: $26.92- $31.92/per hour

Position Summary

We seek a skilled and experienced IT Migration Technician to lead our organization's critical Windows 10 to Windows 11 migration project. The successful candidate will be responsible for upgrading 19 workstations from Windows 10 to Windows 11, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations while maintaining data integrity and user productivity. This is a temporary position with the potential for future contract work based on performance.

Primary Responsibilities

Phase 1: Planning and Preparation (Days 1-4)

  • Conduct a comprehensive inventory of all 19 computers, documenting hardware specifications, installed applications, and user configurations.
  • Identify and document special hardware, peripherals, and mission-critical applications.
  • Set up and configure migration tools (USMT, PCmover, or similar)
  • Create migration templates and standardized procedures
  • Establish network shares and prepare storage media for data transfers
  • Perform pilot migration on 1-2 test systems to validate processes
  • Develop rollback procedures and contingency plans

Phase 2: Pre-Migration Tasks (Days 5-7)

  • Communicate the migration schedule to all affected users
  • Coordinate with department heads to minimize business disruption
  • Create full system backups for all 19 workstations
  • Verify backup integrity and test restoration procedures
  • Document current system configurations and user settings

Phase 3: Migration Execution (Days 8-17)

  • Execute Windows 11 migrations for 2-3 computers daily
  • Transfer user profiles, data, and application settings
  • Install and configure all required applications on new systems
  • Restore user data and verify file integrity
  • Configure network connections, printers, and peripherals
  • Conduct post-migration testing with users
  • Troubleshoot and resolve migration issues
  • Maintain detailed migration logs and documentation

Phase 4: Post-Migration Support (Days 18-20)

  • Perform comprehensive system verification and testing
  • Provide user training on Windows 11 features and changes
  • Create quick reference guides and documentation
  • Address user concerns and technical issues
  • Archive old system images according to retention policies
  • Prepare final project report with recommendations

Required Qualifications

Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field preferred
  • CompTIA A+ certification strongly preferred
  • Microsoft certifications (MCP, MCSA, or Azure) are a plus

Technical Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in IT support and system administration
  • Proven experience with Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems
  • Demonstrated experience performing OS migrations, upgrades, or large-scale deployments
  • Proficiency with at least one migration tool (USMT, PCmover, ForensiT, or similar)
  • Experience with backup and recovery solutions
  • Strong understanding of Active Directory and domain environments
  • Familiarity with Group Policy Objects (GPO) and system policies

Technical Skills

  • Operating Systems: Expert-level knowledge of Windows 10/11, basic knowledge of Windows Server
  • Migration Tools: USMT, PCmover, Robocopy, or similar tools
  • Backup Software: Experience with Acronis, Macrium Reflect, or Windows Backup
  • Scripting: Basic PowerShell or batch scripting abilities
  • Software Deployment: Experience with software installation and configuration
  • Networking: Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and network troubleshooting
  • Microsoft Office: Proficiency in Office 365 applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with Windows 11 migrations specifically
  • Experience with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) or Windows Deployment Services
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Intune or similar device management platforms
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V)
  • ITIL foundation certification or knowledge of IT service management
  • Experience in change management and user training
  • Previous contract or project-based IT work

    • Manual dexterity for cable management and hardware installation
    • Visual acuity for reading technical documentation and screen displays
  • Work Environment:
    • Office environment with multiple locations within the building
    • Occasional work in the server room (climate-controlled)
    • Interaction with employees at all organizational levels
